| Downloading Email Slow with Outlook 2007 |
Based on a large number of issues with the current build of Outlook 2007, we cannot yet recommend its use. For those that have already upgraded, we continue to work to find solutions to the bugs presented in the software. We haven't yet found a surefire solution to the problem, but please try the following steps which have worked for some:
1. First, see if Outlook can diagnose and fix the problem on its own. Go into the Help menu in Outlook and select "Office Diagnostics." It should find and repair any problems. If it throws back any unresolvable issues, please contact Microsoft for further support.
2. If you upgraded from a previous version of Outlook go into the Tools->Rules&Alerts->Options menu and select "Upgrade Rules." Old rules imported from previous versions of Outlook often don't perform well at all with Outlook 2007.
3. How large is your mailbox? Outlook 2007 has trouble delivering mail in a timely fashion to a large mailbox. Microsoft has more details here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932086.
4. Try starting Outlook in Safe Mode. From your Start Menu, click on Run, then type, "outlook /safe" without the quotes. Once Outlook launches, try checking your mail. If this appears to fix your problems, it generally indicates a configuration data corruption problem or a misbehaving add-in/plugin. Try creating a new profile and/or reinstalling any anti- spam/anti-virus software you may be using in conjuction with Outlook.
5. If you upgraded from a previous version of Outlook, try the following: Turn off Outlook 2007 and locate each of these files in turn and rename as indicated. For some reason, during the upgrade these four files can become
corrupted.
- 1. extend.dat - you will find this file in the location | Drive
Letter:\Documents and Settings\user-directory\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\extend.dat -- change it to extend.old
- 2. views.dat - may not find it most of the time
- 3. frmcache.dat - Drive Letter:\Documents and
Settings\user-directory\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\FORMS\FRMCACHE.DAT -- change it to FRMCACHE.old
- 4. outcmd.dat - C:\Documents and Settings\user-directory\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outcmd.dat -- change it to OUTCMD.old
Finally, restart Outlook and see if the changes made any difference. 6. If you're running Outlook 2007 on Vista, go to Programs -> Accessories and right click on command prompt and select “run as administrator”
Then type in the following: netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disable This has proven very successful for many people.
We continue to monitor the situation and will update this article whenever we have new information. If you run across a tip or trick to improve Outlook 2007 performance, please let us know!
